Phone WPM guide

What is a good phone typing speed?

Phone typing speed depends on device, keyboard, accuracy, and whether you use one thumb or two. Use the interpretation bands below as a practical way to understand your ThumbWPM result—not as a population study.

01

How mobile WPM is calculated

ThumbWPM treats five typed characters as one word and normalizes the result to one minute. Accuracy is measured separately by comparing each character with the prompt, including extra characters.

02

Accuracy matters as much as speed

A high WPM score with many errors can be less useful than a slightly slower, clean result. Compare runs with similar accuracy and use a 30- or 60-second test when you want a steadier measurement.

03

Compare like with like

Device, keyboard, test length, prompt style, and one-thumb or two-thumb technique should stay consistent. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to know what actually improved.
